The Central American country of Costa Rica, Spanish for ‘rich coast’, lives up to its name. It is one of the most prosperous countries in the region. In Costa Rica, 10% of land is reserved for agriculture and 14% of the working population is employed in this sector. No less than 25% of the country is a protected wildlife area.

Total Produce B.V. imports pineapples and melons from Costa Rica. The growing areas for Total Produce B.V. are concentrated in the east and, for pineapples, in the northeast. Melons are primarily grown along the west coast. The Atlantic coast has the best climate and infrastructure for the production of pineapples.

A good balance between economy and nature is important to the country. Cost Rica feels very strongly about sustainability, expressed in the government goal to make the country the first climate-neutral country in the world by 2021.

Total Produce B.V. has strong relationships with various growers. This guarantees year-round supplies of pineapples and melon deliveries during the European contra-season.
