The pomegranate is clearly increasing in popularity. Apart from the fact that the pomegranate is one of the world’s oldest known fruits, it is also a mysterious fruit with Biblical and mythical associations. But, above all, it is a healthy fruit with high concentrations of antioxidants, vitamins A, C and E, as well as folic acid and a variety of minerals and fibres.
The most popular variety, Wonderful, has a very long shelf life and a popular sweet-sour taste. Wonderful is the variety that is available longest during the season, partly because it is highly suited for ‘controlled atmosphere’ storage. There are also a number of Early Red varieties that make is possible for the season to start earlier. These various varieties differ in both taste and colour.
